LECTURE AND LAB 4 weekend series -
introduces a wide variety of treatment methods. Since the newest techniques
are often controversial, a range of differing views will be presented.
Discussion periods allow clinicians to ask questions and express concerns.
While concepts are still fresh, the progam continues in the laboratory
with hands-on sessions that provide first-hand experience with the newly
introduced materials and techniques. This combination of verbal, visual
and experiential teaching on a single topic, contribute to highly effective
learning.

The
LECTURE AND LAB series
are 3-day sessions, held on four non-consecutive weekends. This schedule
was designed to minimize the number of days away from your practice and
is ideal for out-of-town participants. While this may seem like a rigourous
schedule, the varied teaching formats, rapid pace of the lectures coupled
with ample coffee and meal breaks, make for a stimulating and pleasant
learning experience.

The Patient Mastery
Program is a required component of the Certificate of Proficiency
in Esthetic Dentistry. The next Program series begins in February
2006 and can be viewed here. It
is designed to be challenging but also rewarding. The Program will
test your knowledge and the skills necessary to achieve excellence
in esthetic dentistry. The program consists of
5 phases.
Prerequistes
A comprehensive,
introductory esthetic dentistry program (such as UB's Practical Esthetic
Dentistry) as well as the Subject Mastery requirements must be completed
prior to participation in the Patient Mastery Program.
History
The Patient Mastery Program was developed with considerations to the
recommendations of the first recipients of the Certificate of Proficiency.
The Patient Mastery Program is designed to evaluate your knowledge and
the skills necessary for excellence in esthetic dentistry.
Patient
Treatment
You will treat
two patients under
the guidance of faculty who are experts in their respective fields.
One patient will be treated at the Esthetic Dentistry Education Center
at the UB Dental School, while the other patient will be treated in
your office with documentation that will be reviewed at each phase.
One patient must
have an indication for an implant in the esthetic zone along with other
esthetic considerations. The second patient should be a complex esthetic
case with anterior and posterior considerations that require restoration
of form, function and esthetics. Both cases will be presented at the
final phase of the program, and must meet the standards of the faculty
before the Patient Mastery Program is considered complete. Download

UB is offering a one year residency program in Esthetic Dentistry through
the Graduate School. The program includes lecture, seminar, laboratory,
clinical practice and research. The residents are also required to take
the Subject Mastery programs through Continuing
Dental Education. An Esthetic Dentistry Certificate through the Graduate
School will be awarded upon completion of the program. For additional

International
Program
Programs are offered for individuals and groups. The center is developing
affiliations with various university dental schools through out the world
to facilitate continuing education for their faculty and graduates. Individuals
may apply for continuing dental education programs in esthetic dentistry
through the division of continuing dental education. The programs are
individualized as to subject, mode of education and length of program.
A certificate of attendance is issued upon completion.
For further information
on courses and
electives available to senior dental students send an email
to Lois Karhinen.

Undergraduate education in esthetic dentistry begins in the freshman year.
The freshmen receive two lectures and a laboratory exercise. The first
lecture is an introduction to esthetic dental materials given in their
biomaterials lecture series. In the second semester, the lecture centers
on home bleaching and shade selection. In conjunction with the lecture
the students participate in a laboratory exercise in which they fabricate
bleaching trays and select shades. In the future, we plan on introducing
home bleaching in the freshman clinical program. The freshman will be
able to offer home bleaching in the preventive clinic along with exams,
preventive instructions and dental prophylaxis.
Sophomores have three
preclinical laboratory projects related to esthetic dentistry. The first
involves a lecture and laboratory exercise on veneer preparation, bonding
and direct placement of composite restorations. The second project is
a lecture and laboratory exercise for preparation of tooth color inlay
and onlay restorations. The final project is a lecture and laboratory
exercise for preparation of all ceramic full crown restorations.
The juniors have a
16 week lecture course to prepare them for clinical esthetic dentistry
in their senior year. There are lectures outlining basic knowledge needed
to place esthetic restorations. The subjects are covered in a manual which
in given to the students at the beginning of the course. The manual follows
the slide series so that the students can take additional notes during
lectures.
The senior year students
are now prepared to place esthetic restorations for their patients. They
have the opportunity to use the Esthetic Dentistry Center where they will
be exposed to new dental materials and techniques. Because of the centers
relationship with many dental manufactures, the center is able to have
up-to-date materials for students use. Students do treatment planning,
complete esthetic work-up, occlusal equilibration, bleaching procedures,
direct and indirect composite restorations, ceramic restorations and other
esthetic procedures. Seniors have opportunities to treat their patients
in their clinical group practices and in the Esthetic Center. .
