The Esthetic Dentistry Certificate Program through Continuing Dental Education includes didactic, research and clinical components. It is a part-time, “modular” program open to all applicants with DDS, DMD or equivalent degrees.

Upon completion of the Program, you should have experience similar in duration and content to a graduate of the advanced certificate programs approved by the State University of New York Graduate School.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Understand those aspects of biomaterials and dental materials related to esthetic dentistry
  2. Understand principles of biostatistics, research design, research methods and scientific writing
  3. Critically evaluate the scientific and technical literature in esthetic dentistry
  4. Identify patients at risk of or with oral disease that may affect the maintenance of oral function, comfort, oral appearance and health
  5. Diagnose radiographic pathology related to esthetic and restorative dentistry
  6. Apply current concepts and practices of esthetic dentistry in the clinical environment. Specific examples of this include performance of bleaching, veneers, anterior composites, direct composites, all ceramic crowns, fiber reinforced composite bridges, direct/indirect porcelain or composite inlays and onlays, anterior crowns and bridges with Ovoid pontics, smile design, implant esthetics, periodontal esthetics, orthodontic esthetics, microabrasion and laser treatment.
  7. Employ suitable preventive, interceptive and restorative dental treatment following scientifically valid principles

REQUIREMENTS of the Certificate Program - download requirement checklist

  • Completion of Postgraduate Series in Esthetic Dentistry or equivalent in content and hours
  • Completion of a minimum of 5 UB/EDEC subject mastery modules or substitution at an affiliated program are required:
    • direct composite dentistry
    • occlusion
    • anterior restorations
    • dental practice management
    • advanced anterior esthetics
    • alternatives to amalgam
    • removable esthetics
    • diagnosis, treatment planning and case presentation
  • Completion of research paper (topic and content approved by Director)
  • Completion of one of the following:
    • Presentation of ten patients cases from practice
    • Teaching in an esthetic program
    • Presentation five articles in refereed journals pertaining to esthetic dentistry
    • AACD accreditation
    • AGD accreditation
    • Board certification in:
      - Prosthodontics
      - Orthodontics
      - Periodontics
      - Others to be considered on an individual basis

Certificate Progam Components in Detail


This comprehensive program introduces a wide variety of treatment methods. Discussion periods allow clinicians to ask questions and express concerns. While concepts are still fresh, the program continues in the laboratory with hands-on sessions with the newly introduced materials and techniques. This combination of verbal, visual and experiential teaching on a single topic, contribute to highly effective learning. Program Details


A thorough understanding and knowledge of biomaterials and dental materials provides the foundation for research and clinical application in esthetic dentistry. Subject Mastery Modules provide a substantial body of knowledge, research experience and clinical proficiency in esthetic dentistry to meet the goals and objectives of the ADA’s Opinion 5.1.2 Program Details
Subject Mastery Affiliations - completion of programs at affiliated institutions may be acceptable for Subject Mastery requirement. All subsitutions must be approved by EDEC Director.


This five phase program encompasses 10 days and involves comprehensive treatment cases. Two patients are required. Both cases must be completed during the program. One will be treated in the Esthetic Dentistry Education Center, the other is to be treated in your office. Both must be submitted for final evaluation at the end of the program. Program Details


The certificate candidates should select a subject in which they would like to develop an expertise. The length of the paper will vary according to the subject. The paper must be sufficient in length and scope to present the subject in depth. When the candidate has decided on a subject, it should be discussed with
Dr. Fred McIntyre for approval. Dr. McIntyre will then mentor the candidate to facilitate the completion of the paper.

  1. Presentation of ten patient cases from practice.
  2. Teaching/mentor in a recognized esthetic dentistry program
  3. Article pertaining to esthetic dentistry published in a refereed journal
  4. AACD accreditation
  5. AGD accreditation
  6. Board Certification in:
    Prosthodontics - American Board of Prosthodontics-
    Orthodontics - The American Board of Orthodontics
    Periodontics - American Board of Periodontology
    Others to be considered on an individual basis
